Dr. Jiménez Acosta Bio English

Hair transplant specialist

Dr. Francisco Javier Jiménez Acosta was born in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. He graduated in Medicine at the University of Navarra (Spain) and was awarded a PhD degree with highest honours (Summa Cum Laude) by the UAM (Autonomous University of Madrid). He specialised in Dermatology with an Internship at La Paz University Hospital (1984-1987) in Madrid.

After being awarded his PhD, he moved to the United States where he lived for four years extending his knowledge and skills in different areas of dermatology. For the first of these four years he worked at the University of Miami as a Fellow in Dermatopathology (Florida, 1988-89). In his second and third year in the States he was selected as Fellow in Mohs Surgery (specialist surgery in the treatment of skin cancer) by the Department of Dermatology of Duke University (North Carolina, 1992-1994). It was during his time at Duke that Dr. Jiménez Acosta had his first contact with hair restoration (hair transplant) surgery through Dr. Dow Stough, one of the most renowned specialists in the world in this area who acted as his mentor. Dr. Jiménez Acosta moved to Hot Springs (Arkansas) to work at Dr. Stough’s clinic for a year (1994-1995), studying and learning in depth the techniques involved in hair transplantation. During this period of specialisation, Dr. Jiménez operated on hundreds of patients under the close supervision of Dr. Stough, learning the most advanced techniques known at the time and coming into close contact with specialists in the field from all over the world.

After this period of specialisation in the US, Dr. Jiménez Acosta returned to Spain where he continued to perform hair transplant surgery, firstly in Madrid and then in his Clinic in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, with now a total of 20 years of extensive experience in this field.

The hair transplant techniques performed by Dr. Jiménez Acosta are the two most advanced techniques used in hair restoration surgery at the present time: the FUT technique, which involves the transplantation of follicular units through the extraction of a strip of skin from the donor site and the microscopic dissection of grafts, and the FUE technique which involves a punch extraction procedure and the transplantation of individual follicular units.

In addition to his work as a hair transplant surgeon, Dr. Jiménez Acosta is a renowned researcher in studies related to the hair follicle and hair disorders, as demonstrated by his numerous publications in both national and international journals. The most important specialist text books in the world on hair transplantation (Unger, Haber/Stough, Barrera, Sam Lam, Marc Avram) include a chapter written by Dr. Jiménez Acosta.

As an example of his desire to remain fully informed of the latest advances in hair transplant surgery techniques, Dr. Jiménez regularly attends the Annual Congresses of the ISHRS (International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery), where he has given numerous workshops and participates each year as a speaker in the scientific sessions. In 2012, he was elected Chairman of the ISHRS’s Annual Congress held in the Bahamas Islands.

Finally, among his numerous honours and awards, he is the only person of Spanish nationality to have been given the “Platinum Follicle Award” by the ISHRS in recognition of his innovative research in hair transplant surgery. The winners of this award, received by just two people each year, are voted for by the members of the ISHRS.

Dr. Jiménez is currently editor of the journal “Dermatologic Surgery”, editor emeritus of the journal “Hair Transplant Forum”, and member of the Board of Governors of the ISHRS.
